What Is Schools Calendar?

Schools Calendar is a free resource that collects, structures, and publishes school calendar data for public school districts across the United States. Instead of hunting through individual district websites — which vary wildly in format and are often buried in PDFs — you can find every important date in one consistent, searchable place.

We cover the first day of school, last day of school, all scheduled breaks (winter break, spring break, fall break, Thanksgiving), teacher workdays, and individual holidays. Every piece of data links back to the official district source.

Who Uses Schools Calendar?

Parents and families are our primary audience. Planning a family vacation around school schedules is complicated — every airline and hotel price spikes during spring break, but spring break isn't the same week in every district. Schools Calendar lets you compare nearby districts side by side so you can find the best travel window for your family.

Employers and HR teams use our data to plan staffing around school closures. When a significant portion of your workforce has school-age children, knowing which weeks have the highest likelihood of schedule conflicts — spring break, the week before winter break, teacher workdays scattered across the year — helps with proactive scheduling and coverage planning.

Developers and data teams building education technology, local services, or family apps can access our structured data via the Schools Calendar API. Instead of scraping hundreds of district websites with incompatible formats, you get a single consistent endpoint that returns first day, last day, breaks, and holidays in a standardized JSON structure.

How Our Data Is Gathered

Our automated pipeline visits each district's official website, locates the published school calendar (which may be an HTML page, a downloadable PDF, an iCal feed, or a Google Calendar embed), and extracts the structured date information. The pipeline handles common variations: scanned PDF calendars are processed with OCR, and calendars published as image files are read using computer vision.

Extracted data is validated against known constraints — first day must precede last day, break dates must fall within the school year, holiday names must match the school year's published schedule — before being saved to our database. The "Last updated" date on each district page reflects the most recent successful extraction run.

Districts that publish updated calendars mid-year (for example, adding a snow makeup day) are detected on the next monitoring run and re-extracted automatically. If you spot an error, use the "Report an error" link on any district page to flag it for manual review.

What Calendar Data Is Available?

Every district page includes the first day and last day of school for the current school year, all scheduled multi-day breaks with their start and end dates, and individual holiday closures with their names and dates. Where available, we also distinguish between student holidays and teacher-only workdays — useful if you're trying to determine whether childcare is needed on a given day.

Each district page includes a free iCal download link. Click it to add the complete school calendar — all days off, all breaks, first and last day — directly to Apple Calendar, Google Calendar, Outlook, or any other calendar application that supports the iCal format. The calendar syncs automatically: if the district updates their calendar and we re-extract it, your calendar app will reflect the changes on its next sync.
